Help Us Create a Cleaner Planet for Generations to Come
Sustainability is a hot topic in our world today and with the current climate crisis, it makes perfect sense. It’s clear we all need to play our part in reducing our environmental impact, but some of us need to figure out where to start, which may be overwhelming.
Never fear! Going eco-friendly isn’t as hard as you might think! In Today’s blog, we’re going to go over seven of the Jenkins Show’s Eco-Friendly Solutions to help you keep your home and garden as sustainable as possible!
Let’s dive into how YOU can live sustainably and contribute to a healthy planet.
Compost Food Scraps
Composting your table scraps is an excellent way to cut down on organic waste. Organic waste produces large amounts of greenhouse gasses such as methane for example. These greenhouse gasses have been proven to impact the environment negatively. Another benefit of composting is having access to nutrient-rich soil. Composted soil has triple the amount of nutrients that regular soil does.
Make Natural Fall Decorations Rather Than Buying Mass Produced Decor
This year, skip the mass-produced fall decor and make it yourself! Go out to your local park and grab a few twigs, some leaves, and maybe a few pinecones. With your supplies, try making a DIY fall wreath or some fall garland. It’s unique, biodegradable and free.
Create a Biophilic Design Within Your Home
Right now, we should all be collectively looking to reduce our carbon footprint and you’d be surprised at how impactful creating a home intertwined with nature can be. Yes, reducing air travel, carpooling, and recycling regularly does help lower your carbon footprint but learning to live alongside nature is key to long-term sustainability.
A few examples of this would be to consider natural vs artificial light or have a compostable toilet installed. Certain house plants such as Snake Plants, or Peace Lily are very effective at purifying air and can help create more oxygen.
Reuse Old Wood When Creating Rustic Wood Signs or Decor
Don’t throw away your old 2x4s! Instead, reuse them to make your own, DIY rustic wood decor. A lot of our old, unused wood scraps end up in landfills one way or another. Repurpose it! Give it a new life and get creative! This way, you have your very own wood decor that is not only cost-effective but locally produced and made with love!
Grow Your Produce
Growing your food is one of the most eco-friendly things you can do for yourself and your family. Most of our produce is shipped thousands of kilometers before it gets to your plate or grocery store. Most of the produce sold in stores is either picked too early or sprayed with preservatives to help it last through the journey to you. When you grow your produce, you control how it is grown and what it is grown in. Everything you’ll grow will be organic and doesn’t have to spend any time in transit.
Invest in Solar Panels
Residential solar panels are still far and few between nowadays, but things are changing and solar panels are becoming increasingly popular. They are the perfect zero-emission substitute for fossil fuels. It’s an initial investment as installing the solar panels will cost you around $3.34/watt in Canada. That works out to be around $25,000 for a standard, 7,500-watt installation. The good news is that once you do invest, your energy bills will be quite low, the value of your home will go up and you may even receive a tax break from the Canadian government for owning one.
Think About Local Wildlife
Oftentimes, we forget that we share this planet with 8.7 million other species. Our home is their home too. So when making decisions for your home or garden, it’s strongly recommended to consider local wildlife. Try your best not to disturb them or damage their habitat and if you have to, be as gentle as possible. If you plan to use any chemicals outdoors, confirm that they’re eco-friendly or safe for pets and wildlife.
